Twitter Film Reviews (June 2013)

June was a pretty good month. I discovered some great films, new and old; and I revisited some of my all time favourites. I was even able to have myself a small movie marathon with the three Maniac Cop trilogy which was a lot of fun. I finally got around to seeing a couple of titles that I had been wanting to see for a while; the first one being [REC] Genesis which was different to what I was expecting, mainly in regards to tone. And the second title was the gangster classic The Public Enemy which was just released on Blu-ray here in the merry old land of Oz. I had been wanting to see it for years and it did not disappoint and it was also my first James Cagney film and it definitely won't be the last.

[REC] GENESIS (2012) the weakest in the series, the comedy does not work so well, but still intense and a fun horror flick overall. 3.5/5 [June 1st]

THE LAST EXORCISM (2010) Loved the documentary style approach; it's confronting, uncomfortable to watch and genuinely frightening! 4/5 [June 1st]

FREDDY VS. JASON (2003) By horror film standards the dialogue is exceptionally bad. But it's entertaining, one made for the fans. 3.5/5 [June 2nd]

SLITHER (2006) A really fun and disgusting modern creature feature with that old style feel. Nice and bloody and the cast is terrific. 4/5 [June 4th]

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (1996) Two films for the price of one. It's so crazy and over the top, it never lets up for a moment, it's awesome. 4/5 [June 5th]

UNBREAKABLE (2000) My kind of superhero movie, it's real and deeply moving. Bruce Willis gives his greatest performance. Must see! 4.5/5 [June 6th]

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA (2013) Michael Douglas gives it his all, he's amazing! It's a touching story and a excellent film from @HBO. 4/5 [June 7th]

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (2010) I don't watch a lot of animation but this was pretty good. Nice story and stunning animation. 3.5/5 [June 8th]

WEIRD SCIENCE (1985) A totally insane comedy that's everything 80s! It's a mess and makes little scene; but it's so much fun to watch. 4/5 [June 9th]

MANIAC COP (1998) A cool late 80s slasher that's pretty straight forward despite the high concept plot. It's dark, seedy & different. 3.5/5 [June 11th]

MANIAC COP 2 (1990) My favourite in the trilogy, a better made film overall. Think Jason Voorhees dressed as a New York cop. 4/5 [June 11th]

MANIAC COP 3: BADGE OF SILENCE (1993) This one is more supernatural. You'll believe that a zombie can drive a car while on fire. 3/5 [June 11th]

MOVIE 43 (2013) The people who made this have little to no understanding of comedy. It's utterly pathetic! 1/5 [June 13th]

THE AWAKENING (2011) I give up on ghost stories. This was pretty dull and very slow. However there was some nice cinematography. 3/5 [June 12th]

CLOVERFIELD (2008) I love how nothing is explained; it's a serious monster movie but it does fall a little short at the end. 3.5/5 [June 13th]

CHILD'S PLAY (1988) It never gets old, it plays on the fears we all had as children. Great cast and impressive animatronic work. 4/5 [June 13th]

BULLY (2011) is a very sad film that shows the grim reality of how cruel the world can be for children. A well made documentary. 4/5 [June 14th]

GOOD WILL HUNTING (1997) was a very emotional experience. I haven't cried so much from a film in a long time. Matt Damon was flawless. 4.5/5 [June 15th]

DARK CITY DIRECTOR'S CUT (1998) As stunning as this film looks, it's definitely substance over style. This one is truly unique. 4/5 [June 15th]

FLIPPED (2010) A very nice film from Rob Reiner. It has a warm feeling about it as well as some find acting from the younger cast. 3.5/5 [June 17th]

DEMONS 2 (1986) An absolute shambles of a film, a pointless sequel that makes no sense what so ever. But the make-up is wicked cool! 1.5/5 [June 19th]

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (2012) Pretty good; it portrays the social fabric of high school quite well. And that ending, wow! 3.5/5 [June 22nd]

NOT FADE AWAY (2012) Not bad, it's like a serious version of THAT THING YOU DO except it does't go anywhere. But loved the soundtrack! 3/5 [June 22nd]

THE CHANGELING (2008) It's hard to believe this film is based on true events. The plot is well executed and the acting is brilliant. 4/5 [June 23rd]

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD (2013) The worst thing to happen to me, seeing that and my dad hung himself in front of me whilst masturbating. 1/5 [June 24th]

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (1994) Possibly the saddest vampire film around. It shows that eternal life isn't all it's cracked up to be. 5/5 [June 25th]

IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (1953) is a pretty smart film that departs from the usual alien visitor scenario; a must see for sci-fi fans. 4/5 [June 27th]

THE MIST (2007) A very serious creature feature that explores human behaviour. It's extremely well made and acted. See it in B&W! 4.5/5 [June 27th]

CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS (2003) It's been ten years and I still don't know who I believe. One of the best documentaries ever made! 5/5 [June 28th]

FLIGHT (2012) is a powerful drama about a functional alcoholic. The film peaks early but the character self destruction is compelling. 4/5 [June 29th]

THE PUBLIC ENEMY (1931) A staple in the gangster genre; edgy stuff for it's time and it's influence on popular culture is unmatched. 4/5 [June 29th]
