Review: Ted 2 (2015)

This year of sequels continues. I don't think I've ever seen so many in such a short amount of time. The latest one to hit theatres is the Seth MacFarlane vehicle 'Ted 2', which is the follow-up to the 2012 original. This time round our cuddly protagonist, Ted is now married to his girlfriend from the previous film, Tami-Lynn. After several months the newlywed couple are feeling the strain of married life. To rekindle their love for one another, they decided to have a baby. However apart from a number of obvious obstacles, Ted must qualify as a parent by proving he's a person in the eye's of the law as opposed to just a miraculous living, talking teddy bear.

First thing's first, the noticeable absence of Mila Kunis is explained within the first 10 minutes. The explanation is what you've probably already guessed, which is a bit of a downer considering how the first film ended but thankfully my overall enjoyment of the film wasn't hindered. Unlike most sequels, 'Ted 2' doesn't strive to surpass the original, the audience is simply taken on another hilarious ride with Ted and his best friend Johnny. Seth MacFarlane's edgy and satirical style of humour is well and truly present throughout with a level of vulgarity that still manages to shock viewers, often resulting in pure hilarity. In addition, jokes are consistently funny and of course pop-culture references are in good supply. My girlfriend pointed out that the film works well as road-trip, given the nature of the plot. I agree and I think this is what sets 'Ted 2' apart from the it's predecessor. The various situations the characters find themselves in are all very memorable and most importantly, highly entertaining. Performances from the cast are decent; Mark Wahlberg is especially energetic, often on par with his animated sidekick; and despite the loss of Mila Kunis' character, Amanda Seyfriend fills the void nicely as the Ted's rookie attorney.

It's not a necessary sequel but 'Ted 2' definitely delivers. Fans will enjoy it and repeat viewings are warranted.
